Gloved hand pushing a drain cable into a tiled floor drain

Clogged Sewer Line Repair in Rosemount, MN: What to Do

A clogged main sewer line backs up several drains at once, usually the lowest one first. Stop running water, keep everyone away from the backup, and call us. A cable or a jetter clears most clogs, a camera shows why it happened, and a broken or rooted pipe needs repair, not another cleaning.

Sewage coming up any drain is urgent. Stop using water in the house, including flushing and the washing machine. Every gallon you send down has nowhere to go but out of the lowest opening. The line is answered 24/7, and same-day appointments are available when schedules allow.

Not every slow drain is a main line problem. This guide helps you tell the difference, check the cleanout safely, understand what each cleaning method does, and know when the honest answer is that the pipe is damaged and needs to be repaired.

Sewage backing up? Do this first

These steps limit damage while you wait. Do not try to push the clog out with chemicals.

  • Stop all water use.No flushing, no showers, no dishwasher, no laundry. A running washer can fill a basement in minutes.
  • Keep people and pets away.Sewage carries bacteria. Keep children and pets out of the area and wear rubber boots and gloves if you must enter.
  • Stay clear of electrical.Do not walk through standing water near outlets, cords, the panel or the furnace. If the panel is in the wet area, call us and do not go to it.
  • Skip drain chemicals.Chemicals sit in a full pipe, burn skin and make a hand cleaning dangerous for the person who follows.
  • Call and describe the pattern.Tell us which drains are slow or backing up, and whether neighbors have the same problem. That helps us decide where to start.

Signs the clog is in the main line

A single slow sink is usually a branch clog. These patterns point to the main.

  • More than one drain acts up.The shower gurgles when the toilet flushes. The basement floor drain bubbles when the washer drains.
  • The lowest drain backs up first.Water follows gravity. The lowest opening in the house is the first to overflow.
  • Gurgling in toilets or traps.Air pushed back through the house is a sign the main is partly blocked.
  • Sewer odor with slow drains.A smell in the basement along with slowness points to a line that is not moving.
  • Plunging does nothing. If a plunger moves the water a little and it comes right back, the blockage is past the fixture.

What you can check at the cleanout

The cleanout is a capped pipe, usually in the basement near the main stack or outside near the foundation. Looking at it tells you a lot, but opening it has risks.

1

Find it.

Look for a threaded cap on a pipe, often 3 or 4 inches across, in the basement floor or on an outside wall.

2

Look before you open.

If the house is backing up, the cleanout may be full. Opening it can release sewage. Wear gloves and eye protection, and stand to the side.

3

Decide what you saw.

If the cleanout is dry and the house backs up, the blockage is likely inside the house. If it is full, the blockage is downstream of it. Close it and call us.

Do not run a rented cable blind in an old line. It can punch through a weak section or hang on a break. If you want the line cleared properly, our sewer line cleaning service starts at the cleanout.

Cable, jetting or camera: what each does

These are three different tools for three different jobs. Many visits use more than one.

MethodWhat it doesGood forLimit
Cable (auger).A rotating cutting head bores through the blockage.Soft clogs, paper, and some roots.Leaves residue on pipe walls and can snag on a broken joint.
Hydro jetting.High-pressure water scours the pipe wall and flushes debris out.Grease, scale and heavy buildup. Not for a collapsed or badly cracked pipe.
Camera inspection.A small camera on a cable shows the pipe from inside.Finding the cause, the depth and any damage.Shows the problem, but does not clear it.

A camera run after cleaning tells you whether the clog was a one-time event or a symptom of a damaged pipe.

Who owns the pipe, and what Rosemount tells residents

The city of Rosemount says the private sewer pipe between a house and the street main is the owner's, and so is a backup inside it. In practice, a blockage between your house and the street is your repair and your call. If neighbors are backing up too, ask the city whether the problem is in its main. Public Works is at 651-322-2022.

The city also says it camera-inspects its mains every three years. That covers the public pipe, not yours. A clean public main does not mean your private line is clear, so a camera on your own pipe is the way to know.

The city's do-not-flush list matters here. It names wipes of any kind, including those labeled flushable, as well as paper towels, cotton balls, dental floss and hair. The city notes that a flushable label does not mean the item breaks down. If wipes show up in a backup, it is worth stopping them at the source.

Sewer line repairs follow the UPC as Minnesota Rules chapter 4714 incorporates it. The state says altered plumbing must be inspected and tested, so ask your plumber how the inspection is handled for a repair on your private line.

Cleaning is enough, or the pipe needs repair

The question after any cleaning is whether the cause is gone. A second backup in a short time usually says no.

Cleaning is likely enough.

  • One backup after a known cause such as wipes or grease.
  • A camera shows a clean, intact pipe.
  • The line drains well and stays clear.
  • No roots or standing water in the pipe.

The pipe needs repair.

  • Roots entering at joints keep returning.
  • A sag, or belly, holds water in the line.
  • The pipe is cracked, offset or collapsed.
  • Backups return soon after each cleaning.

When the camera shows a break or a bad section, the choice is a spot repair or a replacement of the damaged run. That is what our sewer line repair service covers. Call 811 before any dig, with at least 48 hours of notice not counting weekends and holidays.

What changes the price of a sewer repair

The price depends on the job, and you get a clear price before work starts.

Depth and location of the damage.A break under a driveway or a mature tree costs more to reach than one near the foundation.
Length of pipe affected.A short spot repair is different from a long run that has sagged or cracked.
Method.Digging open the line and trenchless options carry different work, access needs and restoration.
Surface restoration.Concrete, landscaping and sod that have to be put back count for part of the total.

Some homeowner policies treat sewer backup as an optional add-on, and others exclude it. Check yours before you assume it is covered, and take photos of any damage.

If your home is in a nearby town

Rules and help differ by city. Inver Grove Heights says in its 2040 plan that it does not monitor private sewer connections, and that about 2,700 homes were built before 1970. If you live in Inver Grove Heights in an older neighborhood, the private line is yours to inspect.

Hastings has run a city sewer repair grant program for eligible private line repairs. It is worth asking the city about before you start work, since funds and rules can change. If you live in Hastings, ask the city for current details.

Sewer line questions

If one fixture is slow, the clog is in its branch. If several drains act up together, or the lowest drain backs up first, it is likely the main.

It depends. Cables are good for soft clogs and some roots. Jetting scours grease and scale. A camera tells us which one fits.

The city says the pipe from your house to the street main is yours, so a backup that starts there is a plumbing job and not a city call. If the city's main is the cause, that is the city's, so ask Public Works to check. We can help find where the blockage sits.

Rosemount's list says not. It names wipes of any kind, including flushable ones, and says the label does not mean the item breaks down.

Yes. The line is answered 24/7. Stop water use first, keep away from the backup, and call.

Often, if the pipe has a joint or crack that lets them in. A camera shows where, and repair stops the cycle.
